From 1st - 12th June, we're celebrating the work of our incredible volunteers giving up their time to fight UK poverty.

Over 40,000 people volunteered with Trussell Trust projects last year and this week is all about thanking them. We could not operate without generous people giving up their time; let us introduce you to a few of them and find out why they enjoy volunteering with us…

Peter – Foodbank volunteer

“If you spend a lifetime doing your own thing then at some point you have to try and put something back. The work is the work that needs to be done to help other people. It’s a good relaxing way to enjoy a team experience. Here people can be themselves and work in a team to help others.”

“I thoroughly enjoy volunteering. My mum suggested it as I like communicating and working with people. The people are very nice; I love the company and meeting new people.”

Margaret – Charity shop volunteer

“Volunteering a few hours is my drop in the ocean. I’m only making a small contribution but if everyone does a little bit it can make a big difference, and who knows, I may even need to use a foodbank one day.”

Jordan – Social enterprise volunteer

“It’s a good atmosphere; I enjoy meeting new people and interacting with customers. My favourite thing is just helping people, it’s rewarding and a good thing to do.”

“I find it rewarding in many ways; good company, plenty of laughs and the chance to help those in society who are in genuine and desperate need.”

Judith – Eat Well Spend Less course volunteer

“The Eat Well Spend Less course has been a life saver. I didn’t want it to end as I enjoyed it so much. I wanted to support other people and give a little bit back.”

“I enjoy doing something rather than staying in the house doing nothing. It boosts your self-esteem; I was on depression medication and haven’t taken them since I’ve been helping here. It makes me feel happy helping people out, I get a nice feeling inside, I can’t stop smiling.”

John – Workshop volunteer

“I like helping people and everybody is very nice to work with.”

Jill – Charity shop volunteer

“Everyone just makes you feel so relaxed and comfortable. I love being here, I wouldn’t miss it for the world. You’d have to fight me off not to come here. Also, my husband’s retired, so it’s nice to get a day away from him!”

Ash – Van driver volunteer

“You can see when you’ve made a difference in someone’s day. You help them out and it feels good. It also definitely gets you more used to the work atmosphere. I always struggled with working in the past and getting too stressed, so volunteering here is really good.”

These are just a snapshot of the many thousands of people giving up their time every day to help make a difference in their communities. Thank you to each and every one of you.

If you’re feeling inspired by these volunteers and want to join them in having fun and change lives then we need volunteers for the upcoming Neighbourhood Food Collection; find out how you can get involved here. Find out more about volunteering at The Trussell Trust in general here.
