This time of year can be very difficult for individuals and families who are already managing on extremely tight budgets. Increased winter fuel costs, an unexpected illness or a delay in receiving benefits can be enough to push people into food crisis.

Nobody should have to choose between heating and eating. And you can help make sure that no-one has to – by donating food, helping collect it, or spreading the word.

How the Food Collection works

The Food Collection is a partnership between Tesco, The Trussell Trust and FareShare. For three days each year, in Metro, Superstore and Extra stores, Tesco organises and hosts a nationwide drive to encourage customers to buy an extra item or two of food when they shop and donate it on their way out of the store. The food donated is used by the charities to support people who are struggling to put food on the table.

Each participating Trussell Trust foodbank is partnered with a local Tesco store and works with volunteers and Tesco staff to coordinate the Food Collection, greet shoppers on their way into stores, and hand out a tailored shopping list, showing items that the foodbank needs most.

In Tesco Express stores the Food Collection starts ten days before the main collection, on 20th November, with unattended food collection points available for customers to make their donations.

ALL food donated is used locally and is an invaluable boost to foodbanks’ stocks at a time of year that is always extremely busy and demand is high for emergency food.

Tesco also generously tops up customer food donations, by making a financial contribution equivalent to 20% of the value of the food. So by getting involved, you will not only help provide vital food for people experiencing crisis, but the top-up funding will help Trussell Trust foodbanks provide clients with further support.

We are thrilled that the UK’s largest supermarket shares our vision that no one should go hungry, and is working together with us and FareShare to empower local communities to fight poverty.
