Bye Bye Hunger

A nationwide creative writing challenge for kids!

In the UK right now, more people than ever are going hungry. We want to hear what kids have to say about this. So we asked children to get creative and help us say “bye, bye hunger!”

Our winners

We were thrilled to receive so many incredible entries for our competition! From unicorns to monsters, dragons to cats, the entries were creative and inspiring and we’re so grateful to all those children who took the time to enter.

The winning poem was written by Teddy, age 7, whose Russell the Robin impressed our judges with its creativity, use of language and poetry, and understanding of what it means to end hunger. Well done Teddy!

Acceptable?

Poem written by a person with lived experience of poverty, read by volunteers and food bank staff

Our children’s writing competition was inspired by this poem by Caroline, one of the thousands of people who’ve signed up to help us build a hunger free future and who has needed to use a food bank in the past.

“I just didn’t have enough money to live on. I didn’t want to go to a food bank. I was very embarrassed, thinking ‘why am I having to go and get free food?’ I’m not ashamed though because it’s not my fault. And it’s not of my making.”

ACCEPTABLE [ ak-sep-tuh-buhl ]

Adjective.

An activity or situation that most people would approve of consider to be normal

Last year, food banks in our network gave out a record 2.5 million emergency food parcels to people in crisis, including almost a million for children.

This isn’t right. It’s time for us to stand together to say that this is unacceptable, say ‘bye, bye’ to hunger and look forward to a future where no one needs to use a food bank.
