Winter Camp

For many abandoned or disadvantaged children at residential state schools, Christmas is not something to get excited about. Lack of government funding forces schools to shut over the holidays meaning that the children have to turn to the freezing streets or return to desperate home situations.

Many of the children at Lipnitza Orphanage-School come from poverty-stricken Roma communities where conditions are similar to those of the third world. There is no heating and food is often scarce. In many cases these children are also neglected or abused too.

For children with no home to go to, or for those afraid to go home, the only option is a few weeks on the streets in freezing temperatures of -20 degrees, sniffing glue to keep warm.

The Trussell Trust works with staff from Lipnitza School to provide a 10-day winter camp which enables the most vulnerable children to be cared for and secure during the holiday.

Teachers from Lipnitza School volunteer their time to take the children on holiday, playing games, doing activities and helping give the children a happy Christmas.
