Helping Gypsy children to smile again

Since 1997 The Trussell Trust has worked with people living in extreme poverty in Bulgaria. Our work began with Lipnitza Orphanage/ School, which houses and educates eighty 6-16 year olds.

Initial projects focused on the physical restoration of this building, which was in a shocking state with little sanitation. Most of the Lipnitza students come from Roma (gypsy) families who find themselves excluded from Bulgarian society.

Unable to trade, such families live in shantytown style communities where survival can often be a struggle due to lack of food, clothing, running water etc. This poverty leads people into crime, prostitution drugs and alcohol, resulting in a dysfunctional and dangerous environment.

Despite their living conditions the children we work with have so much life and love to give. They are a joy to be around and always an inspiration to those they meet.

The nature of what we do in Bulgaria is continually broadening and changing as relationships with individuals and communities deepen. Through addressing simple physical needs we encourage those who have only know rejection.

This small community of Scravena (pictured below) recently received a donation of wood, which they used to create front yards. This in turn has caused a series of changes within the community whereby living standards are improving step by step. For more on Scravena see our community development pages.

Smiling Roma children: not such a rare sight any more.

With a donation of wood, the residents of Scravena were able to build front yards.
